Mahabalipuram (1st to 7th Century)
The group of monuments at Mahabalipuram includes temples and the great architectural buildings that were made by carving hard rocks. it has about forty monuments that include one of the largest open-air bas-relief in the world.
Valluvar Kottam
Valluvar Kottam is a monument built to pay homage to Tamil Poet Saint Thiruvalluvar. The monument is in the shape of a temple chariot and contains a lively and splendid statue of the poet.
Meenakshi Temple
The enormous temple complex is dedicated to Shiva, known here as Sundareshvara and his consort Parvati or Meenakshi. The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th century.
