Airavata is a mythological white elephant who carries the deity Indra. He is known as a king of elephants. He is a symbol of wealth, nobility & grandeur. He is associated with clouds and rain. According to legend, Airavata emerged from the waters during the process of 'Samudramanthan', the churning of the ocean of milk. His name is derived from the word Iravat, signifying one who is produced from water. Airavata is portrayed with a large number of trunks, tusks or heads whose numbers differ from legend to legend.
