The Elephanta island is located 10km away from the Gateway of India at Mumbai. These caves house rock cut temples dating back to the 7th century AD. The entire complex was created through a process of rock removal. An epitome of Indian cave culture, Elephanta consists of seven caves of which the most notable is the Mahesha-Murti cave. The huge, high-relief work of Mahesha-murti( Trimurti) sculpture is considered to be among the most perfect expressions of Indian a art of that time. The 17 foot( 5.2 metre) high Trimurti, showing Lord Siva in the three roles of creator, preserver and destroyer. This sculpture is supporsed to be one of the centerpieces of the Indian sculptural tradition.
